Custom ICF Home Construction in Santa Rosa, CA – Second Floor ICF Walls & Concrete Pour by Tenax Construction Inc.

Location: Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, CA
Project Type: New Custom Home – Nudura ICF Construction
Phase: Second-Floor ICF Walls & Structural Concrete Pour

Our custom ICF home in Santa Rosa, California has reached a new milestone. The foundation and first-floor ICF walls are done, so Tenax Construction Inc. has moved up to the second floor. The upper-level walls are set, reinforced, and filled with structural concrete.

This update covers one of the most important days on any ICF job: the upper-level concrete pour. Drone footage shows the full scale of the work. A boom pump truck is placing concrete into the Nudura ICF walls while our crew guides every section. Several ready-mix trucks keep the concrete supply steady.

If you missed the first phase, read about it here: Custom ICF Home Construction in Santa Rosa, CA – Foundation & First Floor Build.

H2: Project Overview: A Custom Architectural ICF Home in Sonoma County

This is not a simple box-shaped house. Its design includes:

  • Curved exterior walls that flow around the floor plan
  • A round tower element with a curved stair area
  • Arched window and door openings on both levels
  • Large outdoor spaces framed by structural steel

Many people think concrete homes have to look plain. In fact, ICF handles complex shapes very well. Because Nudura forms are poured as one solid wall, curves and towers become part of the structure itself instead of being added later as decoration.

H2: Scope of Work Completed in This Phase

H3: Second-Floor ICF Wall Installation

  • Installed Nudura Insulated Concrete Forms around the full second-floor perimeter
  • Built the curved wall sections and tower walls to the architectural plans
  • Placed horizontal and vertical steel rebar inside the forms, following the structural engineering
  • Formed rough openings for windows and doors, including openings that our finish carpenters will later turn into arches

H3: Bracing, Alignment & Shoring

  • Set up a full ICF bracing and scaffolding system on the inside of the walls
  • Checked every wall for plumb, straightness, and alignment before the pour
  • Added temporary shoring under the second-floor deck to carry construction loads

H3: Structural Concrete Pour

  • Placed concrete with a boom pump truck so every wall section on the upper level could be reached
  • Kept the pour going with several ready-mix trucks on site
  • Filled the walls in controlled lifts to protect the forms and avoid voids
  • Kept watching the forms during the pour for alignment and consolidation

H3: Quality Control & Documentation

  • Ran pre-pour inspections of rebar, bracing, and openings
  • Sent the homeowner twice-daily progress photos
  • Captured aerial drone footage of the project

H2: What Is ICF Construction?

Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) construction builds walls from hollow foam blocks that lock together. Crews reinforce the blocks with steel rebar and fill them with concrete. The foam stays in place for good. The result is a solid reinforced concrete wall with continuous insulation on both sides.

One ICF wall handles several jobs that a wood-frame wall needs separate layers for:

  • Structure: reinforced concrete core
  • Insulation: continuous foam on both faces
  • Air barrier: a solid wall with very little air leakage
  • Attachment surface: built-in fastening strips for drywall and exterior finishes

Tenax Construction builds with Nudura, a well-known ICF system used across North America.

H2: Benefits of Building an ICF Home in Santa Rosa and Sonoma County

H3: 1. Fire Resistance for Wildfire Country

Sonoma County homeowners know wildfire risk firsthand. ICF walls carry up to a 4-hour fire rating, compared with about 45 minutes for standard wood-frame walls. Concrete does not burn. That makes ICF one of the strongest choices for a fire-resistant custom home in California.

H3: 2. 25–50% Energy Savings

Continuous insulation plus the thermal mass of concrete can cut heating and cooling energy by 25–50%. Indoor temperatures stay steady, which helps through Santa Rosa’s hot summers and cool winter nights. The performance also supports compliance with California Title 24 energy requirements.

H3: 3. Seismic Resistance

Reinforced concrete ICF walls are tested to ASTM E2126 and resist the lateral forces from earthquakes. That matters in Northern California, which is seismically active.

H3: 4. Wind and Storm Resistance

ICF walls can withstand winds over 250 mph, so the home is protected in severe weather.

H3: 5. A Quiet Home

Thick concrete walls with foam on both sides block outside noise, which makes for a calm interior.

H3: 6. Healthier Indoor Air

Concrete does not rot, warp, or feed mold. Low air leakage also gives you better control over indoor air quality.

H3: 7. Pest and Termite Resistance

Termites, carpenter ants, and rodents cannot damage ICF walls, so you avoid a common long-term expense of wood homes.

H3: 8. Long-Term Value

ICF homes are built to last for generations. They often appraise higher, and depending on the carrier, they may qualify for lower insurance premiums because they resist fire and natural disasters.

H3: 9. Design Freedom

As this project shows, ICF supports curves, towers, arches, and custom architecture without giving up any strength.

H2: What’s Next for This Santa Rosa ICF Home

  • Roof structure
  • Arched openings finished by our carpenters
  • Windows and exterior doors
  • Rough mechanical, electrical, and plumbing
  • Exterior finishes and interior build-out

H2: Frequently Asked Questions About ICF Homes

Is ICF construction more expensive than wood frame?
ICF walls usually cost more upfront. Over the life of the home, though, lower energy bills, less maintenance, and better durability often balance out that difference.

Can ICF homes have curved walls and custom architecture?
Yes. This Santa Rosa project includes curved walls, a round tower, and arched openings, all built with Nudura ICF.

Are ICF homes good for wildfire areas in California?
Yes. ICF walls carry up to a 4-hour fire rating, which makes them a strong choice for wildfire-prone areas like Sonoma County.

How do ICF homes perform in earthquakes?
The reinforced concrete core resists lateral loads, and Nudura ICF walls are tested to ASTM E2126.

Does Tenax Construction build ICF homes outside the Sacramento area?
Yes. Our ICF projects include homes in Santa Rosa, Soda Springs, Indio, and Reno, Nevada.

We had a large renovation project at our home, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. The team replaced almost all of our windows, painted the entire house and garage, completely remodeled two bathrooms, removed a wall to combine two rooms into one, and created beautiful smooth walls with molding in the new space. They also installed new carpeting throughout the house, added ceiling lighting to almost every room, replaced all of the outlets and switches, and took care of many other smaller projects along the way. There was a lot of work involved, but the team was hardworking, responsive, and always willing to help. Communication was great throughout the entire process. We especially appreciated Nikolai, the project manager, who was very attentive and easy to work with. We are very happy with the quality of the work and would definitely recommend this company. If we have any future renovation projects, we will absolutely reach out to them again!
